The Shrine
On Monday (7/28) we decided on having a quiet day and just drive up the coast as far as possible which isn’t very far. (When driving off of the ferry we’d seen a sign that said “End of Road, 24 miles.”) Arlene did some research and found a couple of things to look at. The first was the Natioal Shrine of St. Thérèse. The little chapel was beautiful.

Around the grounds were stones with mounted carvings that described the life of Jesus in bullet points. My favorite was this one:

REM Songs
As we drove Arlene was evaluating REM songs on the border of her 2nd and 3rd quintiles just to ensure that everything has be placed correctly. I’ve been singing the song “These Days” ever since.
Echo Cove
Before we arrived at Echo Cove (which was at the end of the road (which was actually only the end of the paved part… it continued on as a dirt road)) we stopped for lunch. We had leftovers from our visit to a restaurant on Sunday evening, The Hangar on the Wharf. Arlene ate the rest of her crab legs on the rest of her salad. I had half of a cuban sandwich which didn’t meet my expectations since I compared it to the best cuban sandwich ever and, therefore, my expectations were unreasonable.
While we were having lunch we saw this Townsend’s Warbler:

Echo Cove was a small cove that was disconnected from the rest of the ocean at low tide. There was a boat launch with an old dingy tied up but sitting on the ground since the tide was too far out.

After The Drive
We went back to the AirBnB and started packing up. On Tuesday morning we had signed up for a guided kayak trip out to Mendenhall Glacier but first we had to check out of the AirBnB and after we had to catch the ferry to Juneau and needed to plan that really well. The thing about the Alaska ferries is that we don’t have access to the car while the boat isn’t at the dock.
